Update on food waste recycling

The street bins have arrived for the food waste recycling scheme in Marchmont but the home caddys have been delayed apparently...

Meadows Festival (1 and 2 June) seeks volunteer helpers

Can you help...

"The Meadows Festival on 1st/2nd June is truly a community event, planned and organised by a small team of enthusiastic volunteers. As such, they need lots of extra help over the weekend to make it happen!

You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to muck in and enjoy yourself at the same time. Generally, volunteers do multiple things over the weekend so you’ll never get bored! If you have a particular preference they can usually work this into the rota. Some of the tasks carried out include…

• helping stall holders find their pitch on the Saturday morning
• giving out programmes and answering questions from the public
• helping to open up the tents in the morning, and close them down at night
• general stewarding
• helping with the running of the Kids Tent or Festival Stage
• setting out chairs etc for the audience
• moving things to where they are needed

They also need people on the Thursday & Friday before the Festival (and the Monday after!) to help with things like…

• setting tents up
• erecting fences, barriers etc
• putting up signs
• laying out bins
• …and 101 other things!

All equipment is provided – you will be given a Meadows Festival laminate badge to keep and a stylish hi vis jacket for the duration of your shift. They provide free refreshments for volunteers – tea, coffee, juice, biscuits etc, plus a voucher each shift, which can be exchanged for a sandwich at the Pavilion Cafe, and you can do all this whilst enjoying the fun of the Festival!

You are more than welcome to come along just for part of the weekend if you are only available then – even if it’s a couple of hours, all help is appreciated. They’re usually on site from 7am until about 8pm on the Friday/Saturday/Sunday"

New edition of Edinburgh Economy Watch is available

The new edition of Edinburgh Economy Watch, compiled by the City of Edinburgh Council is now available.

The Edinburgh Economy Watch presents and analyses a range of economic indicators to describe the impact that current economic conditions are having on the capital and benchmark Edinburgh's economic performance against similar-sized UK cities.  

Your views on the new look of Economy Watch are welcomed. You can provide feedback by taking the ongoing Economy Watch Survey.

Scottish Government consulting on Planning Policy

The Scottish Government have launched a consultation on a Main Issues Report for the third National Planning Framework (NPF3) and on Draft Scottish Planning Policy (SPP). The consultation will run until 23 July 2013

A single web page links to both the National Planning Framework 3 and Scottish Planning Policy consultation documents, as well as associated assessments and ways to comment.

The engagement strategy also includes a number of "drop in" events across Scotland including one in Edinburgh at The Gyle Centre on 30 May from 9am-9pm.

Police Scotland: new website available

Following the amalgamation of the police forces in Scotland a new website has been produced.

This short film made in 2005 is "an evocation of a long-loved Victorian pool through unique archive footage and the memories , routines and strange rituals of regular swimmers and staff at Warrender Baths , Edinburgh."

If you wish you can submit a petition. If you get 500 signatures it'll be considered by the petitions committee and could result in changes to services.

Planning Guidance: listed buildings and conservation areas

Following a consultation last year the City of Edinburgh Council have now issued consolidated guidelines on listed buildings and conservation areas:

City of Edinburgh Council rolling out a food waste recycling service

From the end of March 2013, the City of Edinburgh Council is expanding the food waste recycling service to a further 35,000 flats and tenements across the city. This means that the vast majority of city households will have access to this recycling service.

The changes will help increase recycling rates in Edinburgh. Recycling is easy, protects our environment by sending less waste to landfill, and saves energy, time and money which we can reinvest into local services.  We all need to work together to meet national recycling targets. In Edinburgh we’re aiming for a 50 percent recycling rate by 2015.

Why is it important to recycle your food waste?

The Scottish Government requires us to provide a food waste collection service by 2013, as by 2020 it will be illegal to send this type of waste to landfill.  And by using the new service you will help make a difference to our environment, as we can use the recycled food waste for fertiliser for farms and energy.

Future management and ownership of Easter Craiglockhart Hill Local Nature Reserve

City of Edinburgh Council is seeking views from local people about the future management and ownership of Easter Craiglockhart Hill Local Nature Reserve and the adjacent lands of Easter Craiglockhart Hill.

The Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is in joint ownership between the City of Edinburgh Council and Craighouse Partnership, which has taken over ownership and management from Edinburgh Napier University. Current management of the LNR is through a management plan and management agreement. Responsibility for the management of Council land lies with its Parks & Greenspace Service.

Due in part to the proposed development of the Craighouse Campus by the Craighouse Partnership, an opportunity has arisen to potentially transfer ownership and management of their woodland and open space to the Council or appropriate community body. This would create a single woodland and open space, increasing the size of the area of public land to approximately 16.7 hectares.

A further consultation event has been arranged for the evening of Thursday, 21st March at 7.00 pm.  The event will take place in Morningside United Church Hall, 15 Chamberlain Road, EH10 6JF and all are welcome.

Have your say on Neighbourhood Partnerships

As part of the Council governance review, it was agreed to retain Neighbourhood Partnerships as Advisory Committees of the Council, but to undertake a review to strengthen and develop their role in delivering better outcomes for communities. 

The scope of the review, as reported to the Communities and Neighbourhoods Committee on Tuesday, 19 February includes work to: 

• develop and strengthen current practice 
• enhance community participation 
• strengthen the strategic influence of NPs 

To ensure all stakeholders/partners have an opportunity to inform the future development of NPs in the city, a survey questionnaire has been issued

The survey will close on Tuesday 2 April 2013.

Spring Fling for over 50s on 9th March

Public meeting on 27 Feb about pressure to increase James Gillespie's Primary intake

The main item at the next Marchmont & Sciennes Community Council on 27 Feb will be a Public Meeting (starting at 8pm) about plans concerning James Gillespie's Primary School to cope with rising school rolls in South Edinburgh.  This Public Meeting (held jointly with the Primary School Council) will follow the regular business at the standard Community Council meeting which will start as normal at 7:30pm

The meeting will take place at: St Catherine of Argyle Church 61 - 63 Grange Road. EH9 1TY.

Text of the flyer circulated to primary school pupils reads as follows:

City of Edinburgh Council believe that by asking JGPS to keep the temporary portakabin classrooms, which they had previously agreed to remove, they have found a solution for the rising school roll in the area.  This 'temporary' solution of squeezing more pupils into James Gillespie's could affect our children's education and welfare. Parents are becoming concerned that decisions may be made without transparency or consultation.

What could this mean for our children?

• Loss of General Purpose rooms - drama room, music room, ICT suite (vital resources in a small open plan school) to make room for more classes.

• Less space in shared areas of school - lunch hall, playground, cloakrooms, toilets.

• Less access to shared teachers and resources - music resources, Physical Education provision, after school clubs.

• Negative impact on the experience our children have at school - the school is already utilising every inch of space in the school to ensure the needs of every child are met.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Come to the meeting!  Have your say, ask questions, get some answers!  

The City Council and local councillors have been invited so we can have an open discussion and demonstrate that we are prepared to safeguard our children's education and welfare.
